Environmental Science on the Genesee (E2G)
Corn Hill Navigation’s Environmental Education on the Genesee (E2G) program provides students with an opportunity to learn more about the Genesee River, its uses and its impact on local communities, its current status as an ecosystem habitat, and how the watershed is affected by pollution.
We engage students as citizen scientists to observe and analyze the health of and environmental threats to the Genesee River. During E2G’s centerpiece experience, students cruise aboard Riverie, working with environmental educators to collect field data from the river and conduct biological, chemical, and physical assessments of the river habitat.
Pre-cruise lesson plans and materials are provided to inform students about the water quality factors they will assess and to familiarize students with the observations and assessments they will make at each station, including how to make measurements, perform chemical tests, and sort and identify macro invertebrates.
Post-cruise lessons facilitate student analysis of the data they collected and help students identify and address an issue that affects the Genesee River’s water quality.
Lessons and materials were developed by Corn Hill Navigation, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Rochester Ecology Partners with support from the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute.
