Unlocking the Past Speaker Series on Riverie and Sam Patch
The Erie Canal is so much more than an engineering marvel! It was home to preachers and pirates, brawlers and men called canawlers. The canal was a key portion of the underground railroad, birthed the women’s rights movement, and literally put Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse on the map. Folklore figures Joshua the Frog and Daredevil Sam Patch were well known up and down the historic Erie, as was a mule named Sal.
As part of our celebration of the Erie Canal Bicentennial, we’re taking a deep dive into the incredible and impactful history of the canal. Our Unlocking the Past Speaker Series on Wednesday afternoons throughout the summer, offers the perfect venue for local experts to share their knowledge of the personalities, places, and events of Erie Canal’s history while you enjoy a beautiful cruise on the Genesee River and Erie Canal.
